TOKARNIA 005

By Adam Baruch

This is the debut album by Polish Jazz trio PSM, which comprises of saxophonist Łukasz Poprawski, keyboardist Jan Smoczyński and drummer Michał Miśkiewicz. It presents eleven original compositions, five of which were co-composed by Poprawski and Smoczyński and six were co-composed/improvised by all three members of the trio. The album was recorded at the Studio Tokarnia, which is owned by Smoczyński, who also engineered the recording.

The music is very difficult to classify, as it elegantly avoids any specific genre, perhaps due to the unique sound of the synthesizers, which dominates it. Smoczyński plays the classic analog synthesizer ARP Odyssey (or perhaps the new Korg reissue) and the vintage Roland JX-3P synthesizer, which were popular in the 1970s and 1980s (respectively), but are rarely used today. Listeners used to Smoczyński playing the piano will find his playing here completely different of course. Large parts of the music seem to be improvised, with the saxophone exploring the usual melodic plane while the synthesizer adds weird mechanical/industrial pulsing background.

Overall the music is completely unique on today's Improvised Music scene, incorporating elements of New Wave, Krautrock and other synthesizer oriented Rock movements from the 1980s transported thirty plus years forward in time towards today and overdubbed with almost Free Jazz saxophone improvisations. Of course my feeble attempt to describe this music verbally should be simply replaced by listening to the music.

The overall result is intriguing and certainly unusual, but is definitely not easy to listen to, except for very open-minded and patient listeners. The synthesizers sound definitely weird and uninviting and their combination with the solo saxophone work on top is challenging. The rhythmic pulse provided by the drums keeps the music on track, and enables the listener not to loose track, but does not ease the effort needed to follow the music. Of course all the individual performances are absolutely top notch.

Personally I admire Jan's and his colleagues' vision to make such a bizarre and challenging album, but I am afraid it will by way overhead of the average listener, even on the advanced and well educated Polish scene. Hopefully at least some people will find this album deserving their attention, as it is definitely worthy. As usual Jan proves he is one of the most interesting musicians/personalities on the Polish scene, who deserves to be followed closely.

RER LC05

By Adam Baruch

This is the fifth album by the excellent Polish ensemble Light Coorporation, led by guitarist Mariusz Sobański. This lineup of the ensemble features also saxophonist Paweł Rogoża, vibraphonist Mariusz Gregorowicz, bassist Krzysztof Waśkiewicz and drummer Miłosz Krauz. The album was recorded live in the Polish Radio studio in Poznan, which is named Krzysztof Komeda Studio after the Godfather of Polish Jazz, who made his early recordings there. The ensemble performs seven original compositions, all composed by the leader.

The music presents reworked versions of compositions that previously appeared on the ensemble's first and third albums and completely improvised pieces credited to all five members of the ensemble. This album definitely marks a shift towards improvised music, taking the ensemble further away from their initial Progressive Rock and Fusion image. This constant chameleonic ability to change the musical approach has been one of the greatest assets of Light Coorporation since their inception.

Although instrumentally limited only to five instruments, the ensemble creates wide and diverse sound structures. The addition of the vibraphone (Gregorowicz is the only new member of the ensemble who did not appear on any of the previous albums) changed the overall sound significantly, bringing it even closer to traditional Jazz sound. I have no idea if Sobański was influenced by the presence of the vibraphonist Jerzy Milian as a member of the early Komeda combos, when he decided to add vibraphone to this new lineup, but whatever the reason was, it had a major influence on the overall result.

As already stated above this album emphasizes Free improvisation, which constitutes a major part of the music. However, the music is still very coherent and based on composed parts, which enables the listener to follow up the developments without getting lost within the havoc that is often projected by Improvised Music projects. Some basic riffs and electric guitar parts go back to the Fusion idiom, but everything here is more hinted than explicitly stated, which of course makes life interesting for the listener.

Overall this is another superb release by Light Coorporation, which is surely one of the most interesting, unconventional and sadly underrated ensembles active in Europe today. The album was released again on the prestigious British ReR label, which consistently supports the band. I wholeheartedly recommend to open-minded listeners to investigate this album, as well as the previous releases by Light Coorporation, as they all are still completely valid and lost nothing of their original charm. Well done again!

Chowańce

GAP 5905669506014

By Adam Baruch

This is the fourth album by Polish Jazz guitarist/composer Piotr Domagała, recorded in an unusual setting with the Kwartet Śląski String Quartet (violinists Szymon Krzeszowiec and Arkadiusz Kubica, violist Łukasz Syrnicki and cellist Piotr Janosik) and percussionist Sławomir Berny. Together they perform eleven original compositions, all by Domagała.

The music is an interesting amalgam of Jazz, Fusion, Classical Music and World Music, a true cross-genre voyage, based on beautiful melodic themes and featuring interesting and unique arrangements. The compositions are full of typical Polish/Slavic melancholy and mysticism, expressed both by the melodic/harmonic setting and the complex arrangements, fabulously executed by the string quartet, which often sounds like layers of synthesizers rather than violins, viola and cello. In that respect this is one of the most unique projects I came across in 2016 not only on the Polish scene, but worldwide.

Domagała is a very accomplished guitarist and plays many breathtaking passages on this album. Most of the guitar work is acoustic and uses a plethora of different guitar techniques. A few electric parts are also present, but those are overall less significant as the album presents mostly a serene, intimate atmosphere, which is best served by the acoustic approach, which of course also corresponds well to the string quartet.

The string quartet, as already mentioned, is absolutely superb, playing completely originally and free of any Classical Music conventions, which often limit classical musicians and cause their cooperation with Jazz musicians to fail miserably. In this case the cooperation works out perfectly and the string quartet contributions are equally important to those of the leader. Berny is an ideal choice for this album, where his great sensitivity and rhythmic proficiency suit the music perfectly. Berny's experience with World Music and Jazz oriented projects is very extensive and his contributions here emphasize the rhythmic qualities of the music gracefully.

Overall this is a striking album, which presents ambitious and innovative music, superbly executed by the participating musicians. It is a wonderful example of intelligent music, which can also be very emotional and aesthetically pleasing. The album, which was recorded in the excellent RecPublica Studios, offers a stunning sound quality, which should satisfy even the sternest Hi-Fi connoisseurs. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Monk's Midnight

HV0128-2-331

By Krzysztof Komorek

Po pierwsze kompozytor i wybór jego utworów: Thelonious Monk i zbiór powszechnie znanych i lubianych kompozycji z "Well, You Needn’t", "Blue Monk", "Round Midnight" i "Straight No Chaser".

Szkoda zmarnowanej szansy.

Novos Anos

FOR TUNE 0113

By Adam Baruch

This is the eighth album by Polish Jazz vocalist Krystyna Stańko, recorded with her regular wonderful Baltic crew which includes vibraphonist Dominik Bukowski, guitarist Marcin Wądołowski, bassist Piotr Lemańczyk and guest Brazilian drummer/percussionist Ze Luis Nascimento. Trumpeter Marcin Gawdzis guests on two tracks and drummer Łukasz Żyta on three tracks. Together they perform eleven songs (one is repeated twice), six of which were composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and the rest by different composers like Chick Corea, Mongo Santamaria and others, all with a distinct samba and bossa nova character. All the songs use English lyrics.

This album marks a significant diversion in Stańko's career, which is usually focused on singing original material composed by her or her band members. When I visited her in Gdańsk three months ago, not long after this album was recorded, she told me that this was a conscious decision to create an album which could be enjoyed by a much wider audience than her previous recordings, without compromising the artistic and aesthetic values. There is no doubt that she and her band managed to do just that.

The album includes mostly very well known songs, which have been previously recorded many times by artists all over the world. This album offers however a slightly different approach, with the instrumental arrangements being much more Jazzy than similar efforts. The presence of Bukowski adds another dimension, normally not present on such recordings and the brilliant bass playing by Lemańczyk firmly places these interpretation within the Jazz idiom rather that the usual Pop or easy Jazz genre. Wądołowski adds some beautiful guitar parts, which are also quite different from the standard guitar parts used on samba albums and so does Gawdzis, albeit briefly. Of course having a Brazilian drummer/percussionist on boards ensures that rhythmically everything works perfectly.

Stańko's deep sensual voice is of course ideally suited for these songs, and her vocal theatrics fit the bill perfectly. Although her pronunciation is not exactly "perfect" English, it is not significant as these songs have been sung in English by Jobim himself, Astrud Gilberto and countless other non-native English speaking vocalist and a slightly foreign accent in this case is perhaps an asset rather than a weakness. Stańko of course has the perfect feel needed to perform these songs and does it with obvious passion and love. She uses superb vocalese parts in addition to the lyrics, which are truly delightful. For me the most touching song of the album is the intimate trio which finds Stanko supported just by vibraphone and bass, which is perfection itself. Stańko respectfully leaves a lot of space for instrumental parts, which is most appropriate.

If this album will bring Stańko to a wider public attention, it will serve its purpose ideally. She deserves to be heard and adored by everybody as much as I do adore her, regardless what she does, not because she is my friend, but because she is a true Artist and a wonderful human being. Well done Krystyna, Dear!

Tribute To Andrzej Przybielski Vol.1

SJP 001

By Adam Baruch

This is a criminally overdue tribute album to the Polish Jazz trumpeter/composer Andrzej Przybielski (born 1944), who died in 2011, recorded by an ensemble which features six Polish Jazz trumpeters: Maciej Fortuna (born 1982), Marcin Gawdzis (1972), Wojciech Jachna (1976), Tomasz Kudyk (1976), Piotr Schmidt (1985) and Maurycy Wójciński (1988), i.e. mostly members of the middle aged and young generation of the Polish Jazz scene. The ensemble also features a rhythm section which comprises of guitarist Jakub Kujawa, bassist Grzegorz Nadolny and drummer Grzegorz Daroń. Together they perform four compositions by Przybielski and three collectively improvised pieces. The album also includes a conversation with Przybielski recorded in 2007 at the legendary Mózg club in Bydgoszcz, Przybielski's home town, which also includes fragments of his performances.

The recording and the release of this album was the initiative of Fortuna, who felt an obligation to document and commemorate Przybielski's contribution to Polish Jazz, which is of course highly praiseworthy. However it is difficult to ignore the fact that Przybielski died a dissolute, lonely, sick, neglected and forgotten man, which left a huge black stain on the Polish Jazz scene. Not less significant is the absence on this album of the top Polish Jazz trumpeters of his generation, which painfully emphasizes the fact that Przybielski never received the recognition he so much deserved from his contemporaries and was mostly adored and respected by musician much younger than himself. His life's story is a classic epos of avant-garde being denied recognition at its peak only to be recognized in the aftermath.

Personally I had the pleasure of knowing Przybielski and working with him on several projects in the 1980s, being immediately convinced that he is the most interesting Polish Jazz trumpeter on the local scene at that time. My admiration for his work never ceased, being only rekindled following the tragic news of his death. With all respect to the actual music present on this album, which is very good, it is only secondary to the very existence of this project. Thanks and salutations are of course due to Fortuna and the many people who made this project possible and which, as the Vol.1 suggests, will be continued in the future.

There are many fascinating moments on this album, some superb trumpet passages and solos, great group improvisations and so on. The musical concept is however a bit unclear, as far as I am concerned. Also the idea of six trumpeters playing together, as potentially interesting as it might appear is less effective in reality in my opinion. Perhaps a collection of pieces featuring prominently just one trumpeter or at most two, playing in turn might have been more effective? But these are just matters of personal taste.

Of course all these trumpeters can play and they do play well, but as far as a tribute is concerned, the music is supposed to be spiritually convergent to the music of the subject to whom the tribute is dedicated, which, as already mentioned above, is not really apparent herein. But all things considered, this is a very important album, not only for its music but primarily for what it symbolizes, for its historical importance and for the example it sets. As such it is undoubtedly a major event and a great success!

Atom Accordion Quintet

REQUIEM 120

By Adam Baruch

This is the debut album by Polish ensemble Atom Accordion Quintet, which comprises of accordionist Rafał Grząka and the renowned string quartet called Atom String Quartet (violinists Dawid Lubowicz and Mateusz Smoczyński, violist Michał Zaborski and cellist Krzysztof Lenczowski). Together they perform four contemporary Classical compositions by young Polish composers: Mikołaj Majkusiak, Piotr Wróbel, Krzysztof Lenczowski and Nikola Kołodziejczyk. While the works by the Majkusiak and Wróbel are single-piece compositions, the work by Lenczowski is a four-part Quintet and the work by Kołodziejczyk is three-part suite. The album was released simultaneously on two Polish labels: Requiem Records and DUX Records

As much as I appreciate the need to expose young composers, which this album is all about, somehow I felt a bit disappointed when the music was over. Contemporary Classical music can be, and often is challenging and groundbreaking but this album has little of these qualities. The sound of accordion and a string quartet works together well but was already explored before, and although the musicians are top class, but the music itself just fails to make a strong impression. Even the music by Lenczowski, who writes wonderful music in the Jazz idiom, somehow does not present his usual excellence here, being simply too conventional, even if it is beautifully melodic and gracefully melancholic. An example of the lack of originality is the very last track on this album (by Kołodziejczyk), which sounds almost exactly like music by Astor Piazzolla with string quartet. Somehow the entire album invokes a kind of a déjà vu symptom.

The album is supposed to offer, according to the enclosed booklet, an amalgam of Classical Music, Folklore and Jazz. There is Classical music in abundance, there are some Folkloristic motifs, but there is certainly no Jazz at all, as there is obviously no improvisation involved since all the music is strictly written. This of course is not a problem by itself, but simply an unnecessary confusion.

Obviously the album has its positive sides as well: a profound European aesthetics, wonderful performances by all five musicians, who are obviously virtuosic players, an excellent recording and sound quality and elegant packaging that includes informative bilingual liner notes. Overall this is a well done and original presentation of contemporary Polish Classical Music, which can be enjoyed by many Classical Music connoisseurs anywhere in the world and serve as a wonderful calling card of Polish Culture.

Jakub Dybżyński Equilateral Trio

Intuitive Inversions

HEVHETIA 0135

By Adam Baruch

This is the debut album by Polish Jazz clarinetist/composer Jakub Dybżyński recorded with his trio called Equilateral Trio, which also includes bassist Mariusz Praśniewski and drummer Karol Domański. All trio members are graduates of Music Academies in Denmark, where many young Polish Jazz musicians study and often also stay in the last decade, and where this album was recorded. Together they perform eight original compositions, all by Dybżyński.

The music is quite diverse and moves between melodic modern Jazz and open compositions which are closer to Free Jazz. Some compositions have a steady swinging rhythmic drive others are much less restrained rhythmically, in short an interesting mixture of melodies, rhythms and musical freedom, which works out very well.

Dybżyński is a skilled player, but for the moment lacks the finesse displayed by the veteran Polish Jazz clarinetists. He is however certainly on the right track and will surely gain the necessary experience in the years to come. His compositional skills are already quite mature, and the material on this album is definitely very promising. The rhythm section is really excellent and handles the complex rhythmic patterns with ease and elegance, carrying the music steadily even during the free form passages. They are perfect accompanists to the delicate clarinet sound, delivering an overall powerful message to the listener.

The open, free form compositions are the most impressive parts on this album, and hopefully will be more prominent in the future recordings by the trio. But even on the steady swinging tunes the trio plays interestingly enough to keep the listener fully engrossed in the music. The clarinet is sadly not as popular in Jazz as it deserves to be, and hearing young musicians pursuing the great clarinet Jazz tradition is very encouraging. This is definitely an impressive debut and hopefully will be followed up by no less impressive recordings in the feature. Well done!

Tomasz Bura & Piotr Schmidt Duo 25.11 we Flora Caffe

Tomasz Bura - instrumenty klawiszowe, syntezatory
Piotr Schmidt - trąbka, efekty

Dwójka artystów promować będzie muzykę nostalgicznej i unikatowej w brzmieniu płyty - debiutu Tomasza Bury pt. "Ritual".

Jeden z najwybitniejszych współczesnych polskich pianistów jazzowych i funkowych. Studiował muzykę klasyczną na Akademii Muzycznej w Katowicach. Jest laureatem kilku konkursów jazzowych i klasycznych. Aktualnie mieszka i koncertuje z wielkim powodzeniem w Wielkiej Brytanii. Występował m.in. w brytyjskiej MTV, koncertował we Włoszech, Francji, Rosji, Niemczech, Czechach, Ukrainie i w kilku krajach Afryki. Występował i współpracuje z wieloma popularnymi artystami m.in. Atma Anur (David Bowie, Joe Satriani), Alex Hutchings, Ernesto Simpson, Michał Barański (Benny Maupin, Nigel Kennedy), Marcin Wyrostek (Mam Talent), Edilson Sanchez, Thomas Sanchez, a także Zabrzańską Orkiestrą Symfoniczną i klasycznymi zespołami kameralnymi.

W lipcu 2016 roku wydany został debiutancki album solowy Tomasza Bury pt. "Ritual".

Piotr Schmidt - urodzony w 1985 roku trębacz, kompozytor, lider zespołów i wykładowca. Absolwent Akademii Muzycznej w Katowicach, Instytut Jazzu.

Współpracował m.in. z takimi muzykami jak: Walter Smith III, Ernesto Simpson, Alex Hutchings, Benjamin Drazen, Dante Luciani, Grzegorz Nagórski, Maciej Sikała, Wojciech Karolak, Krystyna Prońko, Wojciech Myrczek, Wojciech Niedziela, Jacek Niedziela-Meira, Grzech Piotrowski, Anthimos Apostolis, Paweł Kaczmarczyk, Paweł Tomaszewski, Mariusz Bogdanowicz, Adam Wendt, Piotr Baron, Kazimierz Jonkisz, Michał Barański czy Wiesław Pieregorólka.

FOR TUNE 0107

By Maciej Krawiec

Pięć kompozycji wypełnia smutna melodyka i zamglone brzmienie instrumentów.

A "Dark Matter" to płyta właśnie przemyślana, inteligentnie równoważąca żywioły i potrzeby artystyczne.

LAM

INSTANT CLASSIC 048

By Adam Baruch

This is the debut album by Polish Improvising Music trio LAM, which comprises of veteran Polish avant-garde activists: clarinetist/composer Wacław Zimpel, pianist Krzysztof Dys and drummer Hubert Zemler. Berlin based producer mooryc, who was involved with the production, adds some electronic sounds. Together they present seven original compositions, all composed by Zimpel, two of which were co-composed by mooryc.

Listeners familiar with the music of Zimpel will find this album closely following his usual concept of contemplative, meditative music, which develops painfully slowly and progresses on a very limited emotional level, almost like the music of Far Eastern cultures, which serves mostly for meditation and prayer. This music has a restricted melodic content, with short melodic themes, which are then repeated in an endless cycle, changing only marginally within each piece. Of course serial, cyclic, minimalistic and repetitive music techniques exist also in the Western Classical Music idiom, but Zimpel's music has more affinity to the folkloristic directions.

Personally this is not a kind of music I'd listen to intentionally, as usually I find it rather limited and annoying. Nevertheless this particular album is an exception, as I quite enjoyed the music herein and listened to the entire album with interest and pleasure. Zimpel's highly emotional and expressive playing on one of the pieces is the absolute highlight of the entire album and justifies getting a copy of it.

Dys, who is a brilliant piano virtuoso, sadly has little opportunity to show his super technique and exceptional ability, staying mostly in the background. Same applies to Zemler, who is a very creative drummer but this music hardly allows him to show his entire arsenal of possibilities. But all the limitations are balanced by a tight correlation between the musicians and the aesthetics of the musical concept, which inspires calm personal introspection, which perhaps is the main purpose of this music.

Not for everybody of course, but Zimpel has many fans on the Polish scene, who will welcome this album openheartedly, which is always a good thing. Personally I'd love to hear Zimpel playing other kind of music for a change, perhaps more Jazz oriented, but I respect his consistency and obvious talent.

JS 020

By Adam Baruch

This is a beautiful album by veteran Polish Jazz saxophonist / composer Adam Pierończyk, recorded during a Mexican tour with his trio, which also included Polish bassist Robert Kubiszyn and Mexican drummer Hernan Hecht. Together they perform eight original compositions, seven of which were composed by Pierończyk and one was co-composed by all three trio members.

The album has a highly unusual sound, mostly due to the use of electronic devices to process the sound of the bass and add background sound layers to the trio's performances. This contemporary approach creates a vigorous and fresh sound of the otherwise strictly Jazz oriented material and is by itself very unique.

Pierończyk is of course one of the best Polish Jazz saxophonists and his playing is nothing short of spectacular. His post-Coltrane approach, which he follows since many years, is an inexhaustible source of inspiration and delight and his stability and consistency are also remarkable. This recording is basically well within the "organized" Free Jazz idiom, with some Fusion injected via the rhythm section contributions.

It is remarkable to hear established and respected musicians still trying to innovate and search for new ways to express their musical vision. This tireless quest is what Art is all about and it's great to see that Pierończyk is faithful to his inner truth and keeps challenging himself, the musicians he plays with and of course his listeners. The intimate relationship between Pierończyk and the rhythm section is one of the crucial elements of this music, which make it so successful. Minimalism, respect and a lot of freedom and space, which this music is based on, can only exist when the ensemble is as tightly knit as this trio, which of course is extraordinary.

Overall this is a superb Free Jazz album, with modern sound and innovative approach, which is definitely one of the most interesting releases on the Polish scene in 2016, which was a great year for Polish Jazz in every facet of its activity. Obviously highly recommended to all music connoisseurs the world over!

Faith

FOR TUNE 0106

By Krzysztof Komorek

Dość długie nagrania – w większości przekraczające siedem minut – dają możliwość rozwinięcia poszczególnych tematów, zarówno w grze zespołowej, jak i w solowej prezentacji poszczególnych instrumentalistów. Utwór "7" to swoisty zbiór mini-duetów, rozmów kontrabasu z innymi instrumentami. "Gość" to kapitalne, równolegle grane sola gitary i saksofonu przechodzące w dłuższy popis pianisty, a następnie perkusisty.

"The Distance" to trzeci autorski album Formanka dla wytwórni ECM. Delusions

FSR 06/2016

By Adam Baruch

This is a debut album by the Wójciński/Szmańda Quartet, which comprises of trumpeter Maurycy Wójciński, pianist Szymon Wójciński, bassist Ksawery Wójciński and drummer Krzysztof Szmańda. It presents eight original compositions, which are not credited on the album's cover and are therefore assumed to be co-composed by all the quartet members.

The Wójciński brothers are quite known on the Polish scene, each of them active in a separate setting, and this more or less spontaneous meeting of their respective talents is quite a surprise. They claim that the participation of Szmańda was the decisive factor, which turned the four individuals into a bona fide Jazz quartet.

The music, which is very difficult to describe as it eschews most of the Jazz conventions, is a form of conversation, which allows space and freedom for the individual players, but is coherent enough to create an aesthetic whole, which also makes a musical sense, although definitely does not try to make it easy to be absorbed. It develops slowly, often from an individual sound, changing into a duet and then being joined by the others, to eventually reach an ensemble form, with all four musicians contributing with equal intensity.

Although all four musicians are obvious masters of their personal instruments, the true hero of this album is beyond the doubt Ksawery Wójciński, who serves as the binding, driving and steering element, without which this music would have simply fallen apart. His virtuosity and self-confidence construct the spine on which the other performances relay for balance and guidance. Nevertheless the other musicians contribute formidably, with Maurycy producing several scorching solos and Szymon playing many brilliant phrases and laying the harmonic base for the improvisations. Szmańda brilliantly does not attempt to play any straightforward rhythms and turns his contributions into Baroque ornamentations, which simply emphasize the basic beauty of the musical structures created by the brothers.

Overall this is a brilliant Free Jazz/Improvised music album, bold, adventurous and interesting, which should make the participants proud of their work. There are endless little gems in this music that are worth being discovered and as such turn this album into a potentially repeated listening experience. It is also a superb example of music, which in spite of the strong element of freedom it is based on, does not venture into chaos and introvert expression that limits communication with the listener. This is definitely one of the strongest statements on the Polish Free Jazz/Improvised Music scene in 2016 (although recorded two years earlier) and another excellent release on the Fundacja Słuchaj Records.

Ants, Bees And Butterflies

CLEAN FEED 377

By Adam Baruch

This is the second album by Polish/Ukrainian Improvised Music ensemble Modular String Trio, recorded live at the legendary Warsaw Pardon To Tu club, the home base of the Polish avant-garde scene. Contrary to its name the ensemble is not a trio but a quartet, and includes a string trio: violinist Sergiy Okhrimchuk, cellist Robert Jędrzejewski and bassist Jacek Mazurkiewicz, but also the modular synthesizer/electronics manipulator Łukasz Kacperczyk. Together they perform eight improvised pieces, which are co-credited to the quartet members and are nameless, but cryptically sequentially numbered.

The music ranges between completely free and open improvisations and more structured, either rhythmically or melodically, pieces. For listeners unfamiliar with Improvised Music this is probably beyond bearable, but connoisseurs of the genre should find this music quite fascinating. It combines the Jazz and Classical Music elements unlike the music of other such ensembles, due to the specific string trio sound and interplay, and as such is pretty unique.

There is a distinct mutual understanding and a high level of musical conversation between the ensemble members, which results in a coherent and plausible musical progression, which the listener is able to follow. Mazurkiewicz is definitely the anchor of the music, supplying the basic pulsations, without which the music would have become way to abstract. As usual the important question is if this music is communicative enough to contribute beyond the closed circle of the musicians involved in making it. The quandary as to the existence of a listener who would like to listen to this music more than once or even repeatedly remains open of course.

Personally I enjoyed listening to this music, but I hope these still young musicians will eventually find a middle way between total and unconditional freedom and some form or structure, to make their music closer to the listeners without compromising their artistic vision. Radicalism for the sake of radicalism is usually the problem rather than the solution.

Laboratory

QM 002

By Adam Baruch

This is an album by Polish Progressive Rock/Jazz-Rock Fusion trio Question Mark, led by guitarist Bogusław Raatz and including also bassist Jacek Dołęga and drummer Marek Matuszewski. Violinist/guitarist Robert Bielak guests on most of the tracks and the legendary trumpeter Andrzej Przybielski guests on one track. The album presents twelve original instrumental compositions by the trio members, three of which are three-part mini suites.

The music introduces some basic themes, which are then used as basis for extended instrumental improvisations, mostly by guitar and violin. The violin improvisations are more Jazz/Fusion oriented and the guitar improvisations are more Prog oriented, so the album is overall quite diverse and multifaceted. The rhythm section is very Rock oriented, which sets the rhythmic patters somewhat towards Heavy Rock, but not overwhelmingly so, which still leaves the instrumental improvisation to be the center of this music.

The track with Przybielski is of course outstanding and one can only regret that the entire album was not recorder with him, which would have turned it into a remarkable album. But at least we can hear the amazing trumpet work on one track, which of course is good enough reason to have this album. Przybielski had the chameleonic ability to feel completely at ease in any musical environment, from extreme avant-garde to commercial Pop, and Fusion/Rock suited him as well as anything else, which is evident here.

The violin work is also quite impressive and people interested in Fusion violin sound should find this album fascinating as well. This album is pretty obscure even on the Polish scene, so perhaps people reading these lines will make an effort to look it up now, as it is definitely worth investigating!

ul. Wieczorka 22
44-100 Gliwice
www.4artgliwice.com
Bilety: 15 zł (do nabycia w Klubie Muzycznym 4art)

Znakomity trębacz młodego pokolenia i uznany, niekwestionowany mistrz pianistyki jazzowej – Piotr Schmidt i Wojciech Niedziela łączą swe siły we wspólnym projekcie. Mimo różnych dróg, planów i doświadczeń muzycznych znaleźli czas na wspólne koncerty. Zespół prezentuje autorskie kompozycje trębacza Piotra Schmidta i czołowego pianisty jazzowego Wojciecha Niedzieli, a także znane i kochane standardy jazzowe. Fantastyczne kompozycje, niecodzienne aranżacje, fenomenalne improwizacje i niepowtarzalny klimat.

Piotr Schmidt – lider grupy Schmidt Electric, wykładowca Akademii Muzycznej w Katowicach oraz w Instytucie Jazzu w Nysie. Lider zespołów, producent muzyczny, kompozytor. Wg. ankiety Jazz Top magazynu JAZZ FORUM – czwarty najlepszy trębacz jazzowy w Polsce. Członek Stowarzyszenia Muzycznego Śląski Jazz Club. W latach 2006-2010 wygrał wszystkie najbardziej prestiżowe międzynarodowe konkursy jazzowe organizowane w kraju i kilka zagranicznych.

Laureat licznych konkursów (m.in. Jazz Juniors, Konkurs Improwizacji Jazzowej, Konkurs Pianistów Jazzowych w Kaliszu i Międzynarodowy Festiwal Federacji Jazzowej w Leverkusen). Współtwórca takich zespołów jak New Presentation (Lora Szafran, Piotr Wojtasik) czy Kwartet i Sextet Jana Ptaszyna Wróblewskiego. Występował – w niemal całej Europie, a także w USA i na Kubie – z takimi artystami jak: Piotr Baron, Henryk Miśkiewicz, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Jacek Niedziela, Michał Urbaniak, Dorota Miśkiewicz, a także Bobby Watson, Mike Mainieri, Jack Walrath, Dave Friedman, Dave Liebman, Bill Mollenhof, Eddie Henderson. Obecnie prowadzi bogatą działalność dydaktyczną w Instytutach Jazzu w Akademii Muzycznej w Katowicach i w PWSZ w Nysie.

Dyliżans Siedmiu

AUDIO CAVE 2016

By Adam Baruch

This is the third album by Polish ensemble Tatvamasi, led by guitarist/composer Grzegorz Lesiak. On this album the quintet lineup, which also included trumpeter Jan Michalec, saxophonist Tomasz Piątek, bassist Łukasz Downar and drummer Krzysztof Redas, was expended to a septet with the addition of Brazilian saxophonist Yedo Gibson and Spanish percussionist Vasco Trilla. The album presents just three expanded original compositions (two lasting over twelve minutes and one over sixteen minutes), all composed by Lesiak. The album was recorded shortly after the recording of their previous album a couple of years back and released only now.

The music is as unexpected as one might expect from Tatvamasi, presenting a wonderful amalgam of Rock, Funk, Free Jazz, Psychedelia, World, Electronic and Ambient influences. The three tracks are extended jams, which basically provide a platform for all the participants to play extended solos over a steady beat. Most of the solos by brass instruments are pretty Free Jazz oriented, while the guitar playing is more Rocky and Ambient. Several musicians solo simultaneously, conversing between themselves and getting involved into group improvisation. The guitar solos take the music back on track and serve as a buffer between the multilayered Jazzy parts. As usual this music simply shuns classification. To listeners familiar with the work of Miles Davis, this music is conceptually similar to the Miles "electric period", which featured electric guitar as a centerpiece of his ensembles.

It seems that this album is more of an experimental recording of a pre-planned jam session rather than a full-fledged new studio album by the ensemble, which is hopefully following soon. Nevertheless it is a superb piece of music, which has very few equals in its category in Poland or anywhere else for that matter.

The music, being pretty esoteric, might not be easily accessible to a wide audience and is definitely way to open and Jazzy for the average Fusion fans, but on the other hand it offers so much more intellectual stimuli that an effort to listen to it open-headedly is definitely worthwhile. Wholeheartedly recommended!

Jakob Bro Trio i Tomasz Stańko Project na Jazzowej Jesieni w Bielsku-Białej !!!

Jakob Bro Trio
17.11.2016, godz. 18.00
Bielskie Centrum Kultury

Jakob Bro - gitary
Thomas Morgan - kontrabas
Joey Baron - perkusja

Jakob Bro - duński gitarzysta i kompozytor mieszkający w Kopenhadze. Drogę do nagrywania dla wytwórni ECM otworzyła mu współpraca z Paulem Motianem & The Electric Bebop Band ("Garden Of Eden", ECM - 2006) oraz Tomaszem Stańko ("Dark Eyes", ECM, 2009).

Kompozycje i styl gry Jakoba Bro to połączenie melodycznej finezji i poetyckiej wrażliwości.
